Australian Gothic

from $121.00
This is a documentary and conceptual photographic series that explores the devastating bushfires that swept across Australia in 2019. ‘What have we done’ is a misnomer, a wrong or inaccurate name or designation of the term. We have not done anything. Humanity has done what we naturally do and nature has Responded in turn. The photograph titled "Eve?" is a provocative representation of our tendency to consume without concern for the consequences. It features an Australian bottlebrush, and Eve appears to revel in her consumption. Conversely, "Australian Gothic" pays homage to Grant Wood's famous painting "American Gothic" from 1930. The couple in this photograph represents an archetypal Australian couple presiding over their burning land. Both photographs feature models who were dusted with actual ashes from the bushfires, which one journalist described as being comparable to a bomb detonation due to their intensity and speed.

These prints were photographed with a Phase One iQ3 100MP and manipulated in Photoshop.
